Meditation Instructions for Sun., Dec. 29, 2013

For this Sunday, December 29th, the focus for our meditation will be on Invitation.  Tosha Silver is the author of a book on how to have a closer relationship with the Divine.  Titled, “Outrageous Openness: Letting the Divine Take the Lead,” it is about how to connect with and allow the Divine to have more of a presence in your life.  She writes, “I know without doubt that a Force of Love exists that can guide, help and interact with each of us in the most intimate and practical way no matter what the conditions…If only we know how to Invite it in.”  There is a common misconception about the accessibility of spiritual assistance in our life.  Sometimes it is easy to assume that spiritual beings, guides, angels, or whatever you want to call them, constantly hover around and are ever present, ready to intervene as necessary.  While that may occasionally be the case, more often than not we need to actively request their assistance by Inviting them to intercede on our behalf.  Unambiguously extending an Invitation for their participation in our life better opens us up and helps us be more receptive to their presence and aid.  This week in our prayer and meditation let us consider how we might like to extend an Invitation to the Divine to be more a part of our life.  Let us examine where we could most benefit from a deeper, closer relationship with the Divine and ask to be shown how to Invite that assistance to be with us in an intimate and lasting way.

In our efforts this week let us also continue to use the energy of our prayers and meditation to amplify the light that covers and fills this nation.  As we perform our meditation this week let us begin by re-energizing the brilliance and power of the light we create.  Just as before, begin by forming a concentrated ball of light that is so bright it is almost impossible to look directly at it.  Raise this sphere of light up high over the nation and then let its rays cascade down to create a solid, impenetrable dome of light that completely covers every inch of our country.  From shore to shore and border to border let the entire continent be filled with this brilliant, dense light that will serve to magnify the best and highest qualities of our country and the people who live across its vast lands.

Please follow the same practice as before: Get centered in your body, ask to bring in your guides and others who are there to assist us, and connect to the circle of others participating in this project.

Ask yourself how do I feel when I have a burning desire to Invite something or someone into my life?  How does it feel in my body when I know extending an Invitation for assistance in my life makes me better able to receive that help?  Then send the energy and intention of those feelings to the nation.

Be sure to disconnect from the circle at the end and express thanks for those who have helped us in this effort.

Meditation Instructions for Sun., Dec. 22, 2013

For this Sunday, December 22nd, the focus for our meditation will be on Sufficiency.  A common challenge during the holiday season is figuring out what to get as a gift for the special people in our life.  The difficulty is often a reflection of the fact that few of us have an actual need for more material goods.  While there might be items we would like to have, they are certainly not essential or necessary for our existence.  Unfortunately, the pressure of getting exactly the right item for someone else, or the disappointment of being given a gift that falls far short of anything we might possibly like, only amplifies the stress of the holidays.  This week in our prayer and meditation time let us consider what is really needed in our life.  What do we have as excess that we would be better off without?  Let us ponder what is truly required for us to live and ask to be shown how to be satisfied with that Sufficiency without succumbing to the cravings of materialism.  May all across our nation come to recognize what is Sufficient in their life and find contentment with what they may already have.

Ask yourself how do I feel when I recognize what is really necessary and Sufficient in my life?  How does it feel in my body when I am able to prioritize my needs and appreciate the Sufficiency of what I already have?  Then send the energy and intention of those feelings to the nation.

Meditation Instructions for Sun., Dec. 15, 2013

For this Sunday, December 15th, the focus for our meditation will be on Connection.  Earlier this year a TEDx talk by Dr. Brené Brown served as inspiration to focus our weekly meditation on the topic of vulnerability.  A short video (which may be found at http://brenebrown.com/2013/12/10/rsabear/) animating another talk by Dr. Brown presents the important distinction between empathy and sympathy.  She makes the point that what distinguishes the sincerity of empathy from the superficiality of sympathy is the Connection made between two people.  In empathizing with another you acknowledge that you understand what they are feeling without the banality of claiming you know exactly how they feel.  There is a healing that comes simply from the realization another person is able to make a Connection without passing judgment.  It makes you feel less alone, especially during difficult or challenging times.  This week in our prayer and meditation let us consider whether there are others around us in need of Connection.  Especially at this time of year when people feel so stressed and overwhelmed, may we be more mindful of the benefits of making Connections that may help ease the strain of the holiday season.

Ask yourself how do I feel when I appreciate the value of Connections to other people in my life?  How does it feel in my body when others ease difficult times by reaching out and making a Connection with me?  Then send the energy and intention of those feelings to the nation.

Meditation Instructions for Sun., Dec. 8, 2013

For this Sunday, December 8th, the focus for our meditation will be on Teaching.  With Nelson Mandela’s recent passing I was reminded of one of my favorite quotations.  In his book, “Long Walk to Freedom,” Mandela wrote, “No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion.  People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.”  What a powerful realization that people have to be Taught to hate.  Exactly how are they being Taught these lessons?  I suspect a significant source of this Teaching comes from how we model behavior for the children we may influence in our life.  Every time we are driving and fire off a rant about what we perceive as ineptitude or rudeness from other drivers, we are Teaching impatience.  Every time we pass by pretending not to notice a homeless person on the street, we are Teaching judgment and stinginess.  Every time someone around us treats a person of color with less courtesy or dignity and we fail to speak up, we are Teaching intolerance and bigotry.  This week in our prayer and meditation let us examine what we Teach others through our words and actions.  What lessons do we want to impart, and how might we want to change our behavior to serve as a better model of that Teaching for others?

Ask yourself how do I feel when I realize I am Teaching others a positive model through my own behavior?  How does it feel in my body when what I am Teaching others represents my best attributes?  Then send the energy and intention of those feelings to the nation.

Meditation Instructions for Sun., Dec. 1, 2013

For this Sunday, December 1st, the focus for our meditation will be on Deceleration.  This year I saw Christmas decorations beginning to appear in retail stores before we had even reached Halloween.  Each year they seem to come out earlier and earlier as retailers rush to draw in shoppers.  Even the madness that is known as “Black Friday” is now gradually creeping into Thursday.  For many of us life seems to be going by so quickly that I resent this added impetus to an already hectic pace.  The pressures of modern life with work and family activities can often lead us to try and squeeze more and more into our schedules.  When we succumb to this temptation to overfill our lives it is easy to rush through activities without pausing to truly savor or appreciate them.  Instead, we should recognize how precious these fleeting experiences are to us.  To truly cherish them we need to Decelerate our lives so we can take time to relish each sensation, each perception, and form a lasting memory that will retain more detail than just a blur.  This week in our prayer and meditation let us ask to be shown ways to help Decelerate our lives so we may experience each moment to the fullest rather than rush on to the next.  By learning how to slow life down we will better recognize the incredible value each instant holds for us and thereby appreciate the perishability of this all-too-brief life on earth.

Ask yourself how do I feel when I am able to Decelerate the pace of my life and retain more of each moment in memory?  How does it feel in my body when I Decelerate my usual hectic rush and take more time to recognize the value of my experiences?  Then send the energy and intention of those feelings to the nation.

Meditation Instructions for Sun., Nov. 24, 2013

For this Sunday, November 24th, the focus for our meditation will be on Worthiness.  The writings of a woman named Linda Tirado about being stuck in the endless cycle of poverty recently were picked up by the Huffington Post and quickly went viral.  The writing is edgy, eye-opening, and just plain honest (you can read it here at http://huff.to/1e9KHKX).  She speaks frankly about the poor decisions she readily admits to making while being stuck in poverty and her expectation that she will never escape its clutches.  One particular quote leaped out at me in her discussion of what impels someone who is poor to make bad decisions such as having multiple children they can’t afford.  Tirado writes, “You have no idea how strong the pull to feel worthwhile is.”  The poor are often incapable of long-term thinking and only live in each moment, trying to eke out whatever pleasure or momentary comfort they can.  They are then forced to live with the consequences.  For those who have never experienced poverty it offers a brief glimpse into that world and provides some insight as to why they are unable to break free of the cycle.  What is striking is that despite the many qualities that separate the world of the poor from the rest of society we all share this basic human need to feel Worthy.  It is what sometimes drives us into bad relationships or leads us to sacrifice our personal lives in order to over-achieve at work.  The funny thing about Worthiness is we all too easily make the mistake of assuming it is something bestowed upon us by an external source, be that an adoring companion or the accolades we strive to collect in a career.  The joke is on us, however, for true Worthiness is a value we ultimately have to grant to ourselves.  It comes from the full knowing of who we genuinely are and the acceptance of that honest persona as being okay despite the flaws.  This week in our prayer and meditation let us ask that all people who struggle with approval find a way to realize their own Worthiness.  May those who lack self-esteem come to accept they are as Worthy as the next person and in learning to better love themselves may they find peace through recognizing their own value.

Ask yourself how do I feel when I realize I am a Worthy person regardless of what others think?  How does it feel in my body when I am able to love and appreciate myself for who I am, leading me to recognize my own Worthiness?  Then send the energy and intention of those feelings to the nation.

Meditation Instructions for Sun., Nov. 17, 2013

For this Sunday, November 17th, the focus for our meditation will be on Pilgrimage.  When most people think of a Pilgrimage they often bring to mind the faithful who travel great lengths to a sacred destination in search of fulfillment, enlightenment, or even just as a demonstration of their devotion.  For this week’s meditation let us consider a slightly different perspective.  Let us think of Pilgrimage as the process of separating yourself from your ordinary life in a manner that leaves you transformed.  No one remains permanently on a Pilgrimage, so another key element is that you eventually return to that routine life as a changed person.  If we are unable to enter into Pilgrimage by traveling thousands of miles to an exotic locale how then can we achieve this same transformative experience?  The opportunities for Pilgrimage are present even in our normal environment.  Consider local retreat centers where you might step out of ordinary life by experiencing a weekend of silence, reading, prayer and meditation.  Vary your normal routine and for one weekend skip the relentless pace of running errands, shopping, etc., to instead spend the time taking long walks or hikes in nature.  Create an altar in your home with a candle placed in front of a spiritually meaningful image, statue or object and spend time in reflection before it.  By removing yourself from ordinary life in this way you may experience the subtle yet powerful changes that are associated with Pilgrimage.  Through this transformative process you may find your return to ordinary life leaves you seeing your surroundings from a fresh perspective that ultimately renews your spirit.

Ask yourself how do I feel when changes in my routine and environment leave me with a fresh perspective as though having gone on a Pilgrimage?  How does it feel in my body when I take a moment to step out of ordinary life and honor my spiritual thirst for Pilgrimage?  Then send the energy and intention of those feelings to the nation.

Meditation Instructions for Sun., Nov. 10, 2013

For this Sunday, November 10th, the focus for our meditation will be on Equanimity.  When someone has been in the presence of a deeply spiritual person they often are described as having felt a powerful sense of calm, serenity, and peacefulness emanating from them.  The Equanimity they exude embraces everyone in their immediate vicinity and can alter how others around them subsequently feel.  There is a steadiness and evenness to their composure in which they exhibit neither the extreme highs nor lows others may experience.  For many of us, achieving this state of energetic homeostasis can at times seem out of reach.  A regular meditation and prayer practice is thought to help achieve that sense of balance.  This week let us use our meditation time to ask for assistance in attaining a deeply-rooted feeling of Equanimity that will help buffer us against the turbulence of everyday life.  Through a stronger sense of Equanimity may we become beacons of calm and serenity in our world and ultimately have a more positive impact on those around us.

Meditation Instructions for Sun., Nov. 3, 2013

For this Sunday, November 3rd, the focus for our meditation will be on Reverence.  To have Reverence towards something or someone is to hold them in respect, honor, perhaps awe or even love.  It is a deep, profound feeling that fills one’s heart when you are either in the presence of the object of Reverence or even just contemplating them.  In our modern society unfortunately we all too easily misattribute feelings of Reverence for pop stars, athletes and actors.  While some of them may indeed be individuals worthy of being held with esteem, too often people place them on pedestals and offer Reverence without really even knowing anything about their character.  This week in our prayer and meditation let us ponder what in our life we most Revere.   If we find at the top of our list someone or something that may not reflect the spiritual beings we aspire to be let us ask to be shown who is worthy of those intense, profound feelings of Reverence.  By drawing closer to them in prayer and meditation may we then find our hearts filled beyond capacity, leaving us able to take in even more love than we had ever imagined.

Ask yourself how do I feel when I hold a deep feeling of Reverence for another being?  How does it feel in my body when my heart is filled and expanded by my awareness of Reverence for another?  Then send the energy and intention of those feelings to the nation.

Meditation Instructions for Sun., Oct. 27, 2013

For this Sunday, October 27th, the focus for our meditation will be on Creation.  One of the most often-cited scenes from the 2004 movie, “What the Bleep Do We Know!?,” has to do with remarks made by Dr. Joe Dispenza about Creating his day.  His statements universally resonated with audiences and told about beginning each day with a conscious intention as to what he would like to see develop.  He stated, “When I Create my day, and out of nowhere, little things happen that are so unexplainable, I know that they are the process or the result of my Creation.  And the more I do that, the more I build a neural net in my brain, that I accept that that’s possible.”  It is understandable why the concept is so attractive.  Who wouldn’t want to feel as though there was something they could do to exert more control over the outcome of one’s day and life?  In a world where sometimes everything seems out of control this is a very alluring idea.  Yet at the same time it is astoundingly simple.  Just Create what you want.  This goes beyond the banal materialism of the popular book, “The Secret.”  In Creating one’s day you metaphysically plant a seed for the universe to assist in its blooming.  This week in our prayer and meditation time let us consider what would we want to Create out of each day in our life?  What seeds might we want to plant with a conscious intention at the beginning of each day that will bloom and nourish our higher self?

Meditation Instructions for Sun., Oct. 20, 2013

For this Sunday, October 20th, the focus for our meditation will be on Reconciliation.  We used this same topic last year to address the animosity and bitterness that erupted during various campaigns in the run-up to the national election.  Given the events of past weeks it seems important to focus on this topic once again.  The dictionary defines Reconciliation as a process to settle or resolve differences and to reestablish a close relationship between parties.  Even though Congress was finally able to pass legislation to resume government operations and avoid triggering a default this is only a temporary stop-gap measure.  There will be ongoing discussions and the eventual need to once again vote on many of these same contentious issues dealing with the budget and debt limits.  Over the course of the next few months let us support this legislative system by contributing our prayers and meditation to bring the energy of Reconciliation to those engaged in this important process.  Let us especially ask that the spirit of Reconciliation be embraced by all those who hold elected office so that greater cooperation may ensue.

Ask yourself how do I feel when I resolve disagreement by seeking Reconciliation?  How does it feel in my body when I am able to reach Reconciliation with those who hold differing opinions from mine?  Then send the energy and intention of those feelings to the nation.

Meditation Instructions for Sun., Oct. 13, 2013

For this Sunday, October 6th, the focus for our meditation will be on Respect.  As the legislative impasse continues, the finger-pointing and debate seems to be growing increasingly rancorous.  Eventually, decisions will be made, compromises will be agreed to by both sides, votes will be tallied, and our government will move on.  Unfortunately, the damage caused by this showdown could continue to impact relationships as Congress tries to move forward.  Each side in the debate appears to be developing only more animosity and less Respect for their opponents.  This will not be at all helpful as both sides take on all the other legislative challenges that await them.  This week in our prayer and meditation let us take the energy of the light we create and focus it specifically on Congress.  Let us fill the entire building with a brilliant, dense light that carries the energy of Respect throughout.  May both sides come to acquire Respect for the other and particularly for their constituents across the country who are being harmed by their inaction.  Additionally, out of Respect for each other and the populace they represent may they develop a willingness to see the validity behind the other side’s arguments in order to reach agreement and serve the higher good of this nation.

In our efforts this week let us also use the energy of our prayers and meditation to amplify the light that covers and fills this nation.  As we perform our meditation let us re-energize the brilliance and power of the light we create.  Begin by forming a concentrated ball of light that is so bright it is almost impossible to look directly at it.  Raise this sphere of light up high over the entire nation and then let its rays cascade down to create a solid, impenetrable dome of light that completely covers every inch of our country, placing special emphasis on Washington, DC and the Congressional Building.

Ask yourself how do I feel when I am able to Respect someone with opinions that differ from mine?  How does it feel in my body when I have Respect for the people with whom I sometimes disagree?  Then send the energy and intention of those feelings to the nation.

Be sure to disconnect from the circle at the end and express thanks for those who have helped us in this effort.

Meditation Instructions for Sun., Oct. 6, 2013

For this Sunday, October 6th, the focus for our meditation will be on Concession.  All of America appears to be watching in disbelief and disdain as our elected officials behave like petulant children by forcing the government to shut down.  Each side in the debate appears unwilling to make any Concessions, but if we are to resolve the impasse such compromises will be necessary.  Rather than rail against this foolishness let us instead use the light and energy of our prayers to bring about a return to common sense.  This week in our prayer and meditation let us ask that ego be set aside, that all our elected officials act in the highest good of this nation and their constituents and exhibit the good sense to be willing to make Concessions.  Let us additionally ask that those impacted by this legislative crisis be given needed support by those around them until governmental operations are restored.

Raise this sphere of light up high over the entire nation and then let its rays cascade down to create a solid, impenetrable dome of light that completely covers every inch of our country.

Ask yourself how do I feel when I am willing to make Concessions in order to resolve problems?  How does it feel in my body when I recognize the importance of setting aside ego and differences and offering Concessions in order to move forward?  Then send the energy and intention of those feelings to the nation.

Be sure to disconnect from the circle at the end and express thanks for those who have helped us in this effort.

Meditation Instructions for Sun., Sept. 29, 2013

For this Sunday, September 29th, the focus for our meditation will be on Anchoring.  Popular Christian author C.S. Lewis did not always hold the strong faith and beliefs that characterized his writing.  As a young man he rejected the notion of God and became an atheist.  During World War I he served in the infantry and fought in the trenches in France, experiencing first-hand the horrors of war as friends were killed before his eyes and he was wounded.  Falling into a deep depression, he foundered for several years before eventually reclaiming his faith.  A strengthened spiritual foundation served to Anchor him and led him to eventually become a source of inspiration for many others through his talks and writings.  This week in our meditation let us consider whether we are sufficiently Anchored in our faith.  For those who may be struggling with feeling lost and adrift, let us ask that they be led to a stronger sense of faith in God that will ultimately help Anchor them against the trials of life.

Raise this sphere of light up high over the entire nation and then let its rays cascade down to create a solid, impenetrable dome of light that completely covers every inch of our country.

Ask yourself how do I feel when I am Anchored in a strong, unshakeable foundation of faith?  How does it feel in my body when I know my faith is Anchoring me against the vicissitudes of life?  Then send the energy and intention of those feelings to the nation.

Be sure to disconnect from the circle at the end and express thanks for those who have helped us in this effort.

Meditation Instructions for Sun., Sept. 22, 2013

For this Sunday, September 22nd, the focus for our meditation will be on Attention.  This past week saw another senseless and entirely avoidable act of violence when an apparently mentally ill young man opened fire at the Washington Navy Yard and all too abruptly ended over a dozen lives.  Once again, as authorities try to piece together what led to the shooting, numerous clues emerge as to the gradual unraveling of the shooter’s mental state.  Just as with the incidents in a movie theater in Boulder, Colorado, on a military base at Fort Hood, Texas, or the campus of Virginia Tech, signs are revealed that could have prevented such tragedies.  In each instance, people in contact with the killer saw troubling indications regarding their behavior but failed to pay enough Attention to recognize the seriousness and take action.  Obviously, none of these people knew for certain how events would play out and therefore were reluctant to call Attention to the disturbed individual.  In some instances the individuals themselves tried to contact authorities or mental health professionals to obtain needed care, but no one paid sufficient Attention to recognize the severity of their illness.  This week let us use the power of our meditation and prayer to help shed light on the needs of those with mental illness that they may receive the care and Attention required to keep them and those around them safe from harm.  Additionally, with a mental health care system that is severely hampered by lack of resources and burdensome regulations let us use the light of our meditation to offer support for all who are trying to aid those in need of Attention and assistance for mental illness.

Raise this sphere of light up high over the entire nation and then let its rays cascade down to create a solid, impenetrable dome of light that completely covers every inch of our country.

Ask yourself how do I feel when I recognize the importance of paying Attention to the state of those around me?  How does it feel in my body when I am able to bring Attention to those who are in need?  Then send the energy and intention of those feelings to the nation.

Meditation Instructions for Sun., Sept. 15, 2013

For this Sunday, September 15th, the focus for our meditation will be on Vibration.  Have you ever held a tuning fork in your hand after striking it to make it Vibrate?  If you grasp the tuning fork too firmly the Vibrations will quickly be dampened and cease prematurely.  This week’s meditation is a reminder that we are forever in a “soup” of Vibrations that surround us, but sometimes we do not allow ourselves to be receptive or open to their presence.  When we do pause and find that moment of inner stillness to become more aware of their presence it can be a wonderful experience.  The feeling or perception of a Vibration different from ours reminds us of all that exists around us in the form of other beings, both incarnate and disincarnate, as well as the Vibrations of the earth beneath our feet and the universe that embraces us.  These Vibrations can transmit knowledge, healing, and support if we allow ourselves to take them in.  However, if we hold ourselves with too much rigidity or close ourselves off to resonating with these Vibrations we become like the tuning fork that isn’t allowed to quaver.  This week in our meditation let us ask that we become more receptive to perceiving those Vibrations so we may receive all they have to offer.  May we ask for assistance in letting go of any tension that prevents us from achieving resonance with those Vibrations and allow them to move through us with ease and comfort.

Raise this sphere of light up high over the entire nation and then let its rays cascade down to create a solid, impenetrable dome of light that completely covers every inch of our country.  From shore to shore and border to border let the entire continent be filled with this brilliant, dense light that will serve to magnify the best and highest qualities of our country and the people who live across its vast lands.

Ask yourself how do I feel when I am able to perceive the presence of Vibrations that surround me?  How does it feel in my body when I am willing to allow the Vibrations of the universe to resonate within me?  Then send the energy and intention of those feelings to the nation.

Meditation Instructions for Sun., Sept. 8, 2013

For this Sunday, September 8th, the focus for our meditation will be on Calling.  Some people consider a “Calling” to be an indicator that one is directed toward a religious life or possibly a specific profession.  Tom Ryan, the author of a wonderful book titled, “Following Atticus,” believes it is much more commonplace than that.  In his on-line blog, Tom writes, “When something inspires you and tells your heart where you are meant to be, what you are meant to do, you have to have the courage of your convictions to take that leap of faith.  It takes place every time you reach for something more, become something more – whether you planned it that way, or were forced into it.”  An indication that it is indeed a Calling and not just a momentary whim comes when there are persistent signs rising up in our path to compete for our attention.  It is the universe’s way of not letting us be distracted into going in the wrong direction.  Yet, when we believe we have a Calling in life it often can appear to be pulling us in a direction we may not initially want to take.  By heeding its Call there can be unimaginable rewards waiting for us, but it can be easy to not want to leave our comfort zone to pursue the unknown path.  This week in our meditation let us consider whether we have recognized the indications of a Calling in our life.  Let us ask whether instead we have too long disregarded those signs and if there is another direction we may want to take in order to attain what is ultimately in our best interest.

Please follow the same practice as before: Get centered in your body, ask to bring in your guides and others who are there to assist us, and connect to the circle of others participating in this project.

Ask yourself how do I feel when I have been aware of the signs of a Calling in my life?  How does it feel in my body when I have chosen to act on a Calling and redirected my life?  Then send the energy and intention of those feelings to the nation.

Meditation Instructions for Sept. 1, 2013

For this Sunday, September 1st, the focus for our meditation will be on Caution.  Deteriorating conditions in Syria hauntingly resemble the situation in 2003 when our country chose to take military action to oppose a despot.  There is little disagreement over whether former Iraqi ruler Saddam Hussein and current Syrian President Bashar al-Assad would be willing to engage in inhumane acts against their people.  Sufficient evidence exists to confirm their madness.  The conundrum for the rest of the world is whether or how to take action.  This week as our nation considers the options let us ask that it proceed with Caution in taking any decisive steps.  May those who would be quick to rattle their sabers be filled with patience and the willingness to engage in diplomatic efforts with the combined support of our allies before responding with force.  May the leaders of our nation and those around the world take time to thoughtfully consider all possible avenues of a peaceful resolution to this problem.  Through the light and energy of our prayers may we support those who truly desire to bring an end to suffering through peaceful engagement rather than retaliatory threats.

Please follow the same practice as before: Get centered in your body, ask to bring in your guides and others who are there to assist us, and connect to the circle of others participating in this project.

Ask yourself how do I feel when I have appreciated the need for Caution before taking action?  How does it feel in my body when I exercise Caution and consider all available information in making critical decisions?  Then send the energy and intention of those feelings to the nation.

Meditation Instructions for Sun., August 25, 2013

For this Sunday, August 25th, the focus for our meditation will be on Encouragement.  There was a video making the rounds this past week on social networks about the wife of a military veteran who was severely wounded in Iraq (you can find it by searching on YouTube for “A Quiet Crisis”).  Her husband received a traumatic brain injury and required constant care and supervision during his lengthy recovery.  The toll that had on his family is highlighted in this video, ultimately resulting in a suicide attempt by his wife.  Fortunately, she was found in time and brought to the hospital.  It was there, as she came out of the fog of an overdose and became overwhelmed with guilt and remorse at her actions that an elderly man in the next bed made the simple gesture of smiling at her.  This effortless act of kindness communicated to this woman that she mattered to someone and gave her the Encouragement she needed.  To Encourage someone is to provide them with hope, courage, and confidence.  As demonstrated in this video, to offer Encouragement doesn’t necessarily require a lot from us yet can make such a difference.  This week let us become more mindful of those who may similarly be going through their own silent crisis, and may we ask to be inspired in simple ways to offer them needed Encouragement.  Through the energy of our prayers and meditation may we find ways to offer signs of Encouragement that help bring light to cast away the darkness surrounding those who are suffering.

Please follow the same practice as before: Get centered in your body, ask to bring in your guides and others who are there to assist us, and connect to the circle of others participating in this project.

Ask yourself how do I feel when I have been Encouraged by others?  How does it feel in my body when I receive Encouragement that helps me prevail in difficult times?  Then send the energy and intention of those feelings to the nation.

Be sure to disconnect from the circle at the end and express thanks for those who have helped us in this effort.

Meditation Instructions for Sun., August 18, 2013

For this Sunday, August 18th, the focus for our meditation will be on Dreams.  For some, day dreaming is seen as a silly pursuit or a waste of time, as though the mind should instead be focused on some other more worthy task.  Yet Dreaming frees us from the bonds of circumstance and other constraints that can inhibit us from extending ourselves and reaching for goals that seem impossible.  In Dreams we can become anyone or anything, travel anywhere, and accomplish the unthinkable.  Many spiritual practices hold that Dreams are a mechanism by which Spirit communicates with us.  It is through the patterns and symbols our Dreams so richly capture that we gain valuable insights and wisdom which might otherwise never be revealed.  This week in our prayer and meditation let us consider whether we give our Dreams enough credit and attention, rather than dismiss them as mere imagination.  Let us ask that we become receptive to the insights and messages that Dreams can deliver, and may we use them to help spur us to act in a way that draws us closer to our higher self and purpose here on earth.

Please follow the same practice as before: Get centered in your body, ask to bring in your guides and others who are there to assist us, and connect to the circle of others participating in this project.

Ask yourself how do I feel when I am able to free my mind and allow myself to Dream of the impossible?  How does it feel in my body when I have an appreciation for the rich insights and wisdom that Dreams bring into my life?  Then send the energy and intention of those feelings to the nation.

Meditation Instructions for Sun., August 11, 2013

For this Sunday, August 11th, the focus for our meditation will continue to be on Protection.  Although embassies in the Middle East and North Africa were slated to re-open this week, the region is still under threats as evidenced by the evacuation of consular employees in Lahore, Pakistan.  Additionally, some worry that domestically we have become complacent with the passage of almost 13 years since the September 11th attacks without similar incidents.  For this next week we want to continue to add the energy of our prayers and meditations to the field of Protection for our own nation, our citizens, and our facilities abroad.  Please add special consideration for the Protection of our military personnel in Iraq and Afghanistan.  Those who remain to serve are particularly vulnerable given the drawdown of forces and the reduced support resources available to them during their tour of duty.

Meditation Instructions for Sun., August 4, 2013

For this Sunday, August 4th, the focus for our meditation will be on Protection.  This week the State Department took the unprecedented step of announcing the temporary closure of American Embassies throughout the Middle East and North Africa and issuing a travel advisory for American citizens in those countries.  The action was prompted by what were deemed credible threats of potential terrorist attacks against Western targets by al Qaeda affiliates.  Sunday, August 4th is considered the most critical time, owing to its significance within the Ramadan holiday period.  It is called the “Night of Power,” when the Koran was first revealed to the Prophet Mohammed, and has served in the past as an impetus for martyrdom among radical Muslims.  Although the immediate focus is on that region of the world the potential also exists that this may prompt groups or individuals with terrorist agendas to act domestically as well.  This week, but with particular emphasis on Sunday, August 4th, let us apply the energy of our prayers to enable security, safety, and Protection for Americans abroad, our embassies and consulates, and for the entire United States.  Let us make the light described below that creates a Protective dome enclosing the United States as bright and dense as possible so that it may repel any evil and keep our country safe from harm.

Meditation Instructions for Sun., July 28, 2013

For this Sunday, July 28th, the focus for our meditation will be on Integration.  With the military presence in Iraq and Afghanistan coming to a close our young men and women returning to civilian life face many challenges as they seek to Integrate themselves back into society.  Military life is, by nature, full of structure in terms of a chain of command (those who make the decisions for others), one’s daily routine, and even the physical environment with meals, clothing and housing provided.  By contrast, civilian life is full of numerous options with little guidance as to how to make the right choice.  At the same time, our veterans often find options lacking when it comes to employment opportunities.  The skills one acquires from military training seldom translate readily to a civilian career.  As a result, our returning military can find themselves ill-prepared to make the transition as they try to Integrate back into their former life.  The struggle to Integrate can add to the stress they already are carrying as a vestige of their military experiences.  This week in our meditation and prayers let us ask that our returning military find a smooth Integration back to civilian life.  May they find their place in society where they feel supported and understood, and may they obtain employment where they feel respected and valued for what they have to offer.

Please follow the same practice as before: Get centered in your body, ask to bring in your guides and others who are there to assist us, and connect to the circle of others participating in this project.

Ask yourself how do I feel when I experience a smooth Integration into new surroundings?  How does it feel in my body when I am able to Integrate or transition easily through changes in my life?  Then send the energy and intention of those feelings to the nation.

Meditation Instructions for Sun., July 21, 2013

For this Sunday, July 21st, the focus for our meditation will be on Revitalization.  This week the city of Detroit, Michigan took the unprecedented step of declaring bankruptcy, making it the largest municipality to do so in U.S. history.  While it remains to be seen whether they will be allowed by the courts to actually file for bankruptcy it is clear there are many people at jeopardy of being directly impacted by this action.  It is easy for us to perceive a “city” as an amorphous behemoth.  A city tends to represent an “it” and not so much an “us” or even a “them.”  Yet, in this instance there are numerous lives that stand to be severely impacted in the form of retirees whose pensions may be cut or even eliminated, residents who depend on critical social services funded by the city, school systems, transportation programs, emergency response agencies, and the list goes on.  Other cities under strain may follow suit – those in areas that have not yet recovered from the real estate boom and subsequent bust or where major industries have up and left to instead be outsourced overseas.  The health of this nation is built from the ground up in our communities, our towns, our cities, and states.  The collective strength of all contributes to the overall viability of our country.  This week in our prayer and meditation let us ask that those towns and cities that have become blighted and strained be Revitalized.  May see they see a return to prosperity, employment opportunities for all, and a thriving culture that enables the healthy lives of their citizens.

Raise this sphere of light up high over the city of Detroit and the entire nation and then let its rays cascade down to create a solid, impenetrable dome of light that completely covers every inch of our country.

Ask yourself how do I feel when I am Revitalized in mind, body and spirit?  How does it feel in my body when feelings of stress are relieved by what strengthens and Revitalizes me?  Then send the energy and intention of those feelings to the nation.

Meditation Instructions for Sun., July 14, 2013

For this Sunday, July 14th, the focus for our meditation will be on Peace and Justice.  Almost exactly two years ago the focus for our weekly meditation topic was on truth in response to the controversial Casey Anthony trial.  This week as the jury in the George Zimmerman case goes to deliberations the country once again waits for what may turn out to be a divisive decision.  Clergy of all faiths have gathered in Sanford, Florida to urge residents to remain Peaceful following the outcome.  In our weekly meditation let us add the energy of our prayers to theirs in the hope that those who may disagree with the final verdict remain calm and orderly and that Peace fill their hearts.  Additionally, let us use the light of our meditation to strengthen and support the judicial process so that Justice may prevail.  There will be sadness and disappointment for both sides of the case, but may the light of our prayers replace any bitterness with a desire for greater patience and understanding that can help to prevent such tragedies in the future.

Ask yourself how do I feel when I experience a deep sense of Peace that relieves any discontentment?  How does it feel in my body when I desire the righteousness of true Justice to prevail?  Then send the energy and intention of those feelings to the nation.

Meditation Instructions for Sun., July 7, 2013

For this Sunday, July 7th, the focus for our meditation will be on Hunger.  Have you ever had a craving for something other than a food?  After a recent prolonged spell of rainy weather, I’m sure most of us found ourselves Hungry for a glimpse of the sun and to feel its warm rays on our skin.  There are times I feel Hungry for the sound of the ocean and to hear its waves pounding like the earth’s heartbeat.  Others perhaps Hunger for the intimacy of relationship.  To have Hunger implies there is something essential to our existence or being that is lacking.  It can be a deep, growling insistence that will not be ignored.  This week in our prayer and meditation let us consider what we Hunger for in our life.  What is essential to our spiritual existence that may be lacking and drives that feeling of Hunger?  Let us then ask for assistance by being shown what is needed to satisfy that Hunger and allow us to grow.

Ask yourself how do I feel when I have the pangs of Hunger for something in my life?  How does it feel in my body when I am aware I Hunger after something that is lacking in my spiritual development?  Then send the energy and intention of those feelings to the nation.

Be sure to disconnect from the circle at the end and express thanks for those who have helped us in this effort.

Meditation Instructions for Sun., June 30, 2013

For this Sunday, June 30th, the focus for our meditation will be on Freedom.  Over the years, the way our nation celebrates the Independence Day, or July 4th, holiday seems increasingly to have more to do with cookouts and fireworks than the original occasion.  On July 4, 1776 our nation adopted the Declaration of Independence, a foundational document for our country declaring its Freedom from British rule.  The Freedom we gained that day set our country on a path that eventually led it to become one of the world’s greatest nations through the dedication, sacrifice and toil of its citizens.  While our country remains far from perfect, the tenet of Freedom on which it was founded is something people too easily take for granted.  This week in our prayer and meditation let us consider the Freedom granted to us as citizens of this nation.  Let us think about the Freedoms for which we are most grateful and ask that our country continue to honor the importance of maintaining those privileges for all.

Ask yourself how do I feel when I appreciate the Freedom that citizenship of this country provides?  How does it feel in my body when I recognize the importance of Freedom for this nation?  Then send the energy and intention of those feelings to the nation.

Be sure to disconnect from the circle at the end and express thanks for those who have helped us in this effort.

Meditation Instructions for Sun., June 23, 2013

For this Sunday, June 23rd, the focus for our meditation will be on Disorientation.  Last Sunday, June 16th, was the first time in the Meditation Project’s nearly five-year history that a weekly topic was not posted.  That weekend I joined some of my siblings in our former hometown area to try and address issues related to an aging parent.  It had been over 30 years since I had moved out-of-state, and I struggled to recognize local roads and neighborhoods.  Everything seemed strangely unfamiliar.  Combine that with the stress of trying unsuccessfully to resolve the parental issue and I found myself thrown into a state of Disorientation so profound it was not until I was back in my hotel room late Sunday evening that I realized what had happened.  Not only had I missed the usual meditation window, but I had even forgotten to post a topic.  Oddly enough, Disorientation is a state that can actually be useful in accelerating or kick-starting a period of growth.  When we remain in the comfortable structure of familiar surroundings and regular routines it is easy to operate on autopilot.  Take us out of those surroundings and disrupt the predictability of routine and suddenly we find our usual coping mechanisms or operational patterns no longer serve us.  When laboratory rats are placed in a maze they find themselves in a foreign environment and need to figure out a strategy to locate an exit or food reward.  As they navigate their way their brain develops new synapses as a result of the effort, subsequently making them more adaptable to change.  While I have no idea whether this recent experience with Disorientation left me with a slightly denser cortex, I am appreciative of the opportunity for growth it may have brought.  This week in our meditation let us consider whether we might find some worthwhile benefit from being taken out of our comfort zone.  Let us ask to be gently led to a state of Disorientation so that we may experience needed growth in our life.

Ask yourself how do I feel when I am in a state of Disorientation that forces me to adapt my usual habits and patterns of behavior?  How does it feel in my body when I am aware of the growth that a state of Disorientation can bring?  Then send the energy and intention of those feelings to the nation.

Be sure to disconnect from the circle at the end and express thanks for those who have helped us in this effort.

Meditation Instructions for Sun., June 9, 2013

For this Sunday, June 9th, the focus for our meditation will be on Mindfulness.  Many studies have shown the benefits that come from Mindfulness meditation.  Practicing Mindfulness meditation can help to reduce anxiety and depression, and a recent study showed it can also help alleviate symptoms of PTSD.  When I first began meditating years ago I used to think it required you to “empty” the mind of all thoughts but soon realized it was a foolish and impossible goal.  Instead of clearing all awareness, thought, and feeling Mindfulness meditation actually makes you aware that all that fills the mind can be perceived without judgment.  Rather than being critical because of the thoughts and feelings that perpetually wanted to intrude on meditation you simply learn to accept them for what they are.  This acceptance gradually develops a feeling of harmony and peace with the state you create during meditation.  In our prayer and meditation efforts this week let us consider what we would like to be Mindful of in our goal to bring healing to the nation and ourselves.  What sort of thoughts and emotions perhaps crowd our mind that would be better replaced by the Mindfulness that brings peace and harmony instead of criticism and discord?

In our efforts this week let us also use the energy of our prayers and meditation to amplify the light that covers and fills this nation.  As we perform our meditation let us re-energize the brilliance and power of the light we create.  Begin by forming a concentrated ball of light that is so bright it is almost impossible to look directly at it.

Ask yourself how do I feel when I am in a state of Mindfulness that brings inner harmony and peace?  How does it feel in my body when I experience the benefits that come from Mindfulness meditation?  Then send the energy and intention of those feelings to the nation.

Meditation Instructions for Sun., June 2, 2013

For this Sunday, June 2nd, the focus for our meditation will be on Affirmation.  There is an internal process known as “self-talk” that occurs almost incessantly in our heads.  It is so constant that many of us even lose awareness that it is going on.  What is surprising is that 70% of this self-talk is negative.  The vast majority of the time what we are saying to ourselves is far from uplifting or encouraging.  Our internal talk consists of critical, negative thoughts such as, “It won’t work,” “They won’t like me,” or “I’m no good at that.”  Can you imagine if we had speakers that audibly broadcast this endless stream of negativity to others around us?  It likely would not project the image we try to portray.  Yet, every single one of us is prone to this habit of negative self-talk.  A spiritual practice of positive Affirmation is one way to help retrain our neurophysiology.  Affirmations are declarations of a statement that one is affirming as true.  When one first begins to use an Affirmation there is the perception that it is, however, far from true.  The amazing thing, though, is that as one continues making the Affirmation on a regular basis it subsequently can alter us physiologically.  The question before us, then, is whether what we want to manifest is positive or negative.  If we consciously choose to adopt positive Affirmations to help counter the negative self-talk they will, over time, begin to dominate and can eventually make us more capable of manifesting greater positivity.  In our prayer and meditation this week let us consider whether there is a particular Affirmation we may want to adopt to help bring a more positive aspect to our life.  Let us seek to lessen the negative chatter of self-talk and replace it through the conscious habit of Affirmation with that which better represents our higher self.

In our efforts this week let us also use the energy of our prayers and meditation to amplify the light that covers and fills this nation.  Let us additionally focus the light of our attention on the areas of the country that have been recently buffeted by extreme weather and ask that they be protected.  As we perform our meditation let us re-energize the brilliance and power of the light we create.  Begin by forming a concentrated ball of light that is so bright it is almost impossible to look directly at it.

Ask yourself how do I feel when I am aware of the change that manifests from positive Affirmations?  How does it feel in my body when I recognize the need to replace negative self-talk with the power of positive Affirmation?  Then send the energy and intention of those feelings to the nation.

Be sure to disconnect from the circle at the end and express thanks for those who have helped us in this effort.

Meditation Instructions for Sun., May 26, 2013

For this Sunday, May 26th, the focus for our meditation will be on Honor.  This coming Monday we pause as a nation to commemorate our fallen veterans on the Memorial Day holiday.  When we consider the sacrifice made by all our veterans, particularly those who gave their life in service to their country, a single day each year to Honor them seems so insufficient.  Let us consider this week how else we might Honor them through simple acts of intention done more regularly.  This can be something as uncomplicated as saying a prayer in remembrance of those who have passed in service.  Consider visiting a local graveyard where military personnel are buried and perhaps Honor their gravesite with flowers or even just a note of gratitude that you leave there.  Better yet, I’m sure they would appreciate being Honored through an act that benefits those who follow them in service today.  There are many organizations that provide assistance to our service men and women, such as the USO, Soldier’s Angels, Adopt A Soldier, etc.  It would be a tremendous way to Honor those who have gone before by making a donation of time, money, or other resources that helps these groups ease the life of our military personnel.  In our prayer and meditation this week let us ask that all military personnel be given the Honor they deserve for their sacrifice and may all come to appreciate the sacrifice they have made to keep our nation safe.

Ask yourself how do I feel when I recognize and Honor the sacrifice made by our military personnel?  How does it feel in my body when I take some action to Honor another person?  Then send the energy and intention of those feelings to the nation.

Be sure to disconnect from the circle at the end and express thanks for those who have helped us in this effort.

Meditation Instructions for Sun., May 19, 2013

For this Sunday, May 19th, the focus for our meditation will be on Presence.  Lalage Snow is a British photographer and journalist who served an embedded tour with her country’s military over the course of four years in Iraq and Afghanistan.  During that time she took individual portraits of several service men and women before, during and after their deployments.  The changes in their appearance are shocking, even haunting, and provide a vivid illustration of the impact of war on our young people.  [To see her photo portfolio go to http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/headlines/2011/12/we-are-the-not-dead-soldiers-on-afghan-mission/].  Blank eyes stare out in the photographs, often sunken and lined with dark shadows.  For me, the post-war images show faces still etched with stress but equally disturbing is the sense that they are vacant inside.  It is as though each individual found their experiences so painful that they chose to withdraw inside to a remote place where they could no longer have to be Present and feel.  These images portray the wounds of the soul that go far beyond any physical injuries.  This week let us ask that the hidden, internal anguish of all military veterans be healed by the light of our prayer and meditation.  May we help fill them with the light and healing energy that will encourage them to become more Present in their bodies and give them the strength to fully embrace life once more.

Ask yourself how do I feel when I am fully Present and comfortable in my body?  How does it feel when my senses are heightened through an awareness of my Presence in the physical world around me?  Then send the energy and intention of those feelings to the nation.

Be sure to disconnect from the circle at the end and express thanks for those who have helped us in this effort.
