Meditation Instructions for Sun., December 30, 2018

For this Sunday, December 30th, the focus for our meditation will be on Review.  Every account I have ever read of the afterlife refers to an initial process of Review that requires the person who has newly transitioned to look back over his or her life.  This period of Review is not to serve as a punishment but rather as an opportunity to learn valuable lessons.  The person works to gain an understanding of where they need to focus their efforts in the next incarnation to overcome karmic challenges that may be repeated patterns across lifetimes.  In this next week we will see the end of 2018 and the beginning of another year that lies before us with all its potential.  As we mark this transitional period let us use our moments of prayer and meditation to contemplate the year that has passed and is coming to its end.  Rather than wait until the afterlife let us use this time here on earth to gain an understanding of the lessons we can take away from what has transpired thus far in our life.  Let us Review what we have done well and where we need to improve.  May we feel proud of our positive accomplishments and recognize the growth that has come from the lessons and challenges we have faced.  Let us ask to be shown how to refocus our efforts on those aspects of our life where we still need improvement.  Additionally, let us contemplate the achievements as well as failings of our nation over the past year.  May this Review process make clear the path our country needs to take so we may continue to move forward and achieve our highest potential as individual citizens and as a nation.

In our efforts this week let us also continue to use the energy of our prayers and meditation to amplify the light that covers and fills this nation.  As we perform our meditation this week let us begin by re-energizing the brilliance and power of the light we create.  Just as before, begin by forming a concentrated ball of light that is so bright it is almost impossible to look directly at it.  Raise this sphere of light up high over the nation and then let its rays cascade down to create a solid, impenetrable dome of light that completely covers every inch of our country.  From shore to shore and border to border let the entire continent be filled with this brilliant, dense light that will serve to magnify the best and highest qualities of our country and the people who live across its vast lands.

Please follow the same practice as before: Get centered in your body, ask to bring in your guides and others who are there to assist us and connect to the circle of others participating in this project.

Ask yourself what do I feel in my body when I gain valuable insights from Reviewing my past?  How does it feel in my body when I give myself credit for what I have accomplished but also recognize through Review where I need to do more work in my life?  Then send the energy and intention of those feelings to the nation.

Be sure to disconnect from the circle at the end and express thanks for those who have helped us in this effort.

Meditation Instructions for Sun., December 23, 2018

For this Sunday, December 23rd, the focus for our meditation will be on Light.  This past week we experienced the Winter Solstice which marks the shortest day of the year and the beginning of longer days with more available Light.  As we proceed toward the Winter Solstice in the fall we find the evening darkness coming earlier and earlier, and it can be a time that leaves people feeling less energized.  There is another source of darkness beyond mere lack of illumination.  Although I have yet to hear a satisfying explanation as to why it is present in the world there is beyond a doubt a darkness in the form of evil.  The interesting thing about evil is it thrives on darkness and is repelled by the Light.  In the presence of meanness, the purposeful intent to harm others, or other ways in which evil is manifested, it can be tempting to respond in like manner.  Yet the only thing that reduces the impact of evil in the world is to bring greater Light.  I have a metaphysical practice I do where when some wrongdoing has happened I surround the perpetrator in Light.  I do this to help authorities find the offender, to potentially alert innocents and make them aware of the person’s true nature so they can avoid encounters with them, and to presumably make the wrongdoer feel uncomfortable by the presence of Light so they shrink back into the darkness rather than be at liberty to operate freely in the world.  This week in our prayer and meditation as we proceed into the Light and leave the Winter Solstice behind let us consciously think of where we can serve to amplify the Light that is present in our world.  Rather than rail against darkness let us focus on shining greater Light and through this practice make those with evil intent realize their bad conduct will not be tolerated.  May the energy and Light of our prayers help fill our homes, communities and nation with an abundance of Light that leaves no room for darkness.

Ask yourself what do I feel in my body when I am in the presence of a vibrant source of Light that makes everyone around it feel protected and full of goodness?  How does it feel in my body when I intentionally increase the Light I project into the world to help diminish the darkness that might otherwise be present?  Then send the energy and intention of those feelings to the nation.

Be sure to disconnect from the circle at the end and express thanks for those who have helped us in this effort.

Meditation Instructions for Sun., December 16, 2018

For this Sunday, December 16th, the focus for our meditation will be on Differences.  I recently read an account by a person who was born with a genetic defect that left them physically deformed.  They endured years of multiple surgeries growing up and, not unexpectedly, years of bullying from their peers in school.  At one point they even contemplated suicide as a result of feeling ostracized by society.  Fortunately, they were able to find the courage to keep going and eventually embraced their uniqueness.  Despite the pressure during adolescence to fit in and be like everyone else they realized their Differences were what defined them as an individual.  Life would be awfully boring if all of us were exactly the same.  It is our Differences that introduce an interesting variety into life.  Unfortunately, it is the fear of what makes us Different from each other that is the basis for prejudice and biases.  We are afraid of what we don’t understand, and if what we see in others is not what we are used to being surrounded by they may represent a threat to us.  This week in our prayer and meditation time let us examine what makes us Different from others.  Let us ask to be supported in our desire to be Different and to recognize the value we bring by our uniqueness.

Ask yourself what do I feel in my body when I appreciate what makes me unique and Different from others?  How does it feel in my body when I embrace rather than reject the Differences of others around me?  Then send the energy and intention of those feelings to the nation.

Be sure to disconnect from the circle at the end and express thanks for those who have helped us in this effort.

Meditation Instructions for Sun., December 9, 2018

For this Sunday, December 9th, the focus for our meditation will be on Preparedness.  The area where I live is facing what may turn out to be a significant winter storm this weekend.  As happens in many places where such weather events occur people rush to be ready for the storm’s effects.  They make sure they are Prepared by stocking up on supplies, and it is not unusual to find supermarket shelves bare of the essentials in the days leading up to the storm.  I am fascinated by this display of human behavior which often takes the appearance of panic as people frantically search for what they believe they may need in the event they are snowed in or lose power.  Imagine if we gave as much attention to our Preparedness for the afterlife as we do to a winter storm.  I’m a believer in reincarnation, and for me the “afterlife” refers to an interim period of review to learn the lessons necessary to be better Prepared to tackle the challenges of the next incarnation.  If we aren’t successful in resolving unhelpful patterns in this life we get a “do-over.”  Even though we may be fortunate to experience a sort of karmic reboot it doesn’t mean we should procrastinate in this life and leave the hard work for the next one.  Although there are no guarantees, if we can overcome some of our deficiencies in this go-round perhaps the next lifetime will be a bit easier.  This week in our prayer and meditation time let us examine whether we are leaving spiritual work undone in this life that we need to address.  Let us ask to be guided how to be better Prepared for the next incarnation so we may continue to move forward in our desire to attain our Higher Self.

Ask yourself what do I feel in my body when I take the steps to be as Prepared as possible for an event in my life?  How does it feel in my body when I recognize the importance of being Prepared to help ease a future challenge?  Then send the energy and intention of those feelings to the nation.

Meditation Instructions for Sun., December 2, 2018

For this Sunday, December 2nd, the focus for our meditation will be on Mirroring.  We are taught that we were created in God’s image.  Although we will always be imperfect, it provokes a sense of awe to think that we reflect some of the qualities of our Divine Creator.  Some sects, such as the ancient Gnostics, believed that we each contain a “divine spark of God” within us.  I find this concept both comforting and inspirational.  To possess a tiny portion of God’s character and being inside us perhaps draws us closer to the Divine One.  We are eternally connected and therefore can never be totally separate from God.  When I ponder this truth, it motivates me to be as true to my Higher Self as possible.  By striving to attain all the best qualities of my Higher Self I believe it helps me to better Mirror my Creator.  As human beings we are sure to fall short of this lofty goal, but by being more mindful of our ethereal nature we will hopefully be drawn back onto our path when we stray.  As we enter a holiday season that has too long been commercialized let us consider how we might instead Mirror that divine spark.  In our prayer and meditation time let us ask whether we truly Mirror our connection to the Divine One through how we behave in our thoughts, speech and interactions with others.  May we each be drawn to an awareness of our connection with God that inspires us to better Mirror that divine nature here on earth.

Ask yourself what do I feel in my body when I consciously seek to Mirror the qualities of the Creator that I possess?  How does it feel in my body when by Mirroring the divine spark within me I am drawn closer to God?  Then send the energy and intention of those feelings to the nation.

Meditation Instructions for Sun., November 25, 2018

For this Sunday, November 25th, the focus for our meditation will be on Reconciliation.  A friend of mine has had a strained relationship with an in-law for years.  They never speak to each other, and she feels unwelcome at this individual’s house.  The reasons for the tension in their association are unclear; she can recall no cataclysmic episode that led to the discord.  Family gatherings where both are present have been understandably uncomfortable for my friend.  However, over the recent Thanksgiving holiday, she was amazed to have this individual behave towards her in a much more welcoming manner.  There was no explicit apology or even attempt at explanation for the past frostiness, but it was clear the animosity was no longer present.  I was struck by the obvious joy she felt at the Reconciliation in a season when family gatherings can easily become springboards for arguments and upheaval.  Many people look to the leaders around them to be their role models.  We emulate the conduct of people in authority we presumably respect, such as our teachers, religious leaders, law enforcement personnel, and elected officials.  Rather than look to them for how to behave I believe we should model how we expect them to conduct themselves.  For years as a nation we have wrung our collective hands and bemoaned the lack of bipartisanship in our government.  We chide both parties for failing to get along yet follow a different standard in our own personal lives.  Let us instead seek to model the spirit of Reconciliation in our families, our communities, our schools and our work places.  In our prayer and meditation time let us ask to be shown how to reach out to those with whom we have difficult relationships and find a way to Reconcile those differences.  If we can succeed at this on an individual level perhaps those more public authority figures will be encouraged to behave likewise.

Ask yourself what do I feel in my body when I have been able to reach a Reconciliation with someone in my life?  How does it feel in my body when I realize how rewarding the act of Reconciliation can be to repair a broken relationship?  Then send the energy and intention of those feelings to the nation.

Meditation Instructions for Sun., November 18, 2018

For this Sunday, November 18th, the focus for our meditation will be on Play.  Remember when you were a child and loved to Play being grown-up?  The fun of pretending to have responsibilities and chores to do when Playing house, for example, made adulthood appear tantalizing to a youngster.  Then suddenly we find ourselves older and saddled with duties that seem inescapable and definitely less amusing. As we enter this holiday season it is so easy to feel weighed down by all that we have on our “to do” list.  Add to this having to accomplish everything under conditions where winter weather begins to make travel difficult, roads and stores are more congested, and we begin to feel stressed and frazzled by the challenge of the season.  Rather than allow ourselves to feel burdened let us choose an alternative approach that takes the drudgery of our adult responsibilities and makes them feel more like Play.  Try singing out loud when washing dishes or vacuuming the house.  Those seven cartoon dwarves who whistled while they worked were onto something for I’m sure it made it seem less like a grind and more like Play.  If you are in a hurry to get somewhere and find your blood pressure rising when stuck in traffic, try dancing (safely, please) from behind the wheel.  Drum your fingers on the steering wheel to the beat of music, sway your shoulders and bob your head up and down.  It can feel silly and fun and carefree and definitely makes holiday travel feel more like Play than a pain.  This week in our prayer and meditation time let us try to ease the stress of this holiday season by exploring ways we can make everyday tasks seem more like Play than problems.  Let us ask to be reminded to never lose the spirit of Play we had as children and to always make time for Play in our life.  May a resurgence in the spirit of Play sweep this land and help ease the stress this time of year can bring.

Ask yourself what do I feel in my body when I recall what it was like to be carefree and allow myself to Play?  How does it feel in my body when am able to reduce my anxiety by converting a chore into Play instead?  Then send the energy and intention of those feelings to the nation.

Meditation Instructions for Sun., November 11, 2018

For this Sunday, November 11th, the focus for our meditation will be on Value.  This past week we observed quite a bit of variability in the issues that seemed to incite passions around our country.  People were first riled up about the run up to and then results of the mid-term elections.  Tensions were raised when people objected to the way the President treated a news reporter.  Depending on your perspective, others were incensed at the way reporters posed questions to the President.  And then stuff happens.  A gunman opened fire in the midst of a happy gathering at a bar, instantly snuffing out a dozen lives.  A wildfire roared at the mind-boggling rate of an entire football field each second, destroying homes, businesses, and leading to more loss of life.  In those heart-wrenching tragedies we sometimes are confronted with split-second decisions as to what matters most.  A brave policeman chose to run into the hail of gunfire to try and save lives.  Homeowners desperately fleeing the inferno had little time to gather precious possessions and some had to deal with the anguish of leaving animals behind.  Those who escaped unscathed were rattled to their core and expressed gratitude for their survival.  Those who suffered the loss of loved ones or homes were left numb at the prospect of how to pick up life again.  In either instance those affected by the tragedies spoke of how they forever altered their appreciation of what mattered most to them.  How do you estimate the Value of the loss of a human life?  In a crisis, how do you decide what you Value most and can’t live without or are willing to risk life and limb to preserve?  By the end of the week, the issues that previously seemed so important held little Value in the new accounting of the grand scheme of things.  This week in our meditation time let us send the light and energy of our prayers to those whose lives were altered by these horrific tragedies.  Let us also use that time to examine how we place Value on what matters in our own life.  Are there people, things or activities that we believed we could not do without that might not really be worth the Value we attribute to them?  How do the things we appear to Value in our life reflect what we aim to be as we try to achieve our Higher Self?  Let us ask that all across this country come to a better appreciation of what really matters and what is worthy of Value in their estimation of life.

Ask yourself what do I feel in my body when I am able to appreciate what I truly Value in my life?  How does it feel in my body when I know the things on which I place Value in my life are really worthy of it?  Then send the energy and intention of those feelings to the nation.

Meditation Instructions for Sun., November 4, 2018

For this Sunday, November 4th, the focus for our meditation will be on being Informed.  The value of the Fourth Estate, as journalism and media are sometimes referred to, is in their ability to serve as conduits of news to help keep us Informed in a timely manner.  Most of us cannot recall a period in our life when we did not have ready access to breaking news through either radio or television coverage of critical events.  We take for granted the immediacy and availability of having Information at our fingertips, especially through our ubiquitous mobile devices.  There is also a downside to the ease with which Information can now be disseminated.  In the rush to gain an electronic “scoop” some news coverage loses accuracy.  Recently the journalism and media news professions have come under criticism for biased reporting.  There is a major newspaper I have subscribed to for almost 40 years.  This past year I canceled my subscription because the bias in their coverage of national events was so evident I felt I could no longer have faith in what they wrote.  It was a difficult decision, because I truly believe we have the responsibility to keep ourselves Informed of what is happening in our communities and country.  I also feel the heavy-handed criticism they were dishing out was unnecessary.  There were, to my view, plenty of legitimate reasons to level criticism at what was occurring, but their rancor became so obvious and petty that it made me lose trust in their objectivity.  Unfortunately, some people have taken this as license to harass and even threaten or assault journalists and media reporters.  Rather than engage in violence I would much prefer that people hold news reporting to maintain standards of accuracy and objectivity.  It is a profession that is crucial to our understanding of local, national and international events.  We have mid-term elections taking place this week around the nation, and our ability to be properly Informed about issues and candidates on the ballot rests with journalists and reporters.  This week in our prayer and meditation time let us focus light and energy on those whose responsibility it is to fairly and accurately keep us Informed of the news.  May our prayers help support those who are trying to report news in a manner with ethics and integrity so we may all be better Informed.

Ask yourself what do I feel in my body when I recognize I am fully Informed on matters of importance?  How does it feel in my body when I appreciate how being Informed helps me make better decisions?  Then send the energy and intention of those feelings to the nation.

Meditation Instructions for Sun., October 28, 2018

For this Sunday, October 28th, the focus for our meditation will be on Humanity.  Our nation has once again been assailed by the violence spurred from prejudice and hatred.  More lives have been lost in the tragic events of this most recent onslaught; lives that cannot be fully measured by a listing of their names, ages, professions, etc.  Underneath these events are the inability to set aside differences and the fear an irrational person feels when they are threatened by those who are not like them.  When someone is so thoroughly consumed with fear and hatred they are incapable of seeing others as Human beings.  It is easier to instead sort them into opposing classes of what the deranged believe they represent.  By neatly binning them in this manner, they become even more generic and lose any sense of individuality.  If only people who feel threatened by those who are different would be willing to suspend judgment and engage in real dialogue instead.  I’m sure they would find all manner of similarities that would make the differences seem less significant.  This is a process that everyone, including those of us who would not resort to violence in the face of differences, would find beneficial.  All of us have prejudices and fears of one sort or another.  If we consciously take the step to resolve those through dialogue and seeking understanding perhaps we can help model for others how to perceive the Humanity in everyone rather than focus on the differences.  This week in our prayer and meditation time let us ask that this nation be filled with the willingness to recognize that each of us is a member of Humanity with more in common than we are unalike.  Let us pray that the spirit of acknowledging the spark of Humanity in every person help us overcome our differences.

Ask yourself what do I feel in my body when I am able to set aside differences and appreciate how others who are not like me remain a part of Humanity?  How does it feel in my body when I work to recognize the Humanity in all so I may more easily overlook how we are different?  Then send the energy and intention of those feelings to the nation.

Meditation Instructions for Sun., October 21, 2018

For this Sunday, October 21st, the focus for our meditation will be on Expression.  There is a Sufi saying that goes, “Before you speak, let your words pass through three gates:  Is it true?  Is it necessary?  Is it kind?”  Such wisdom passed down to us through the centuries never seemed more critical than in our modern age.  Thanks to technologies such as the Internet, television and radio, we have immediate access to what someone Expresses publicly.  Although one might think the immediacy and broad dissemination would assure accuracy there is no guarantee even of that.  I have been in online social media forums where mean-spirited falsehoods were quickly spread and become nearly impossible to fully retract or correct.  I have also seen news coverage of events where statements were taken out of context to alter their meaning.  While we may never be able to completely prevent those attempts at manipulation we can control our own speech.  If we were to stop and consider before Expressing ourselves either verbally or in writing what our communication reflects about us, would we still state it?  It sometimes appears too much Expression is coming from places such as anger, hatred, fear, and jealousy.  Instead, we would be better served to Express ourselves from a spiritual foundation that reflects our higher self and not our more base characteristics.  This week in our prayer and meditation time let us consider how our Expression is a reflection of our true self.  Let us ask that we be gently reminded to first weigh how we Express ourselves against the spiritual standard of kindness, truth, and whether it is really necessary, and may more people across this nation be drawn to adopt this same standard in their communication.

Ask yourself what do I feel in my body when I remember to consider how what I Express can impact others?  How does it feel in my body when I pause to consider whether want I want to Express is true, necessary or kind?  Then send the energy and intention of those feelings to the nation.

Be sure to disconnect from the circle at the end and express thanks for those who have helped us in this effort.

Meditation Instructions for Sun., October 14, 2018

For this Sunday, October 14th, the focus for our meditation will be on Integration.  For quite a while I have wanted to try and establish some sort of morning routine that enables me to start the day feeling more connected to Spirit.  Too often it feels as though my daily schedule quickly accelerates out of control, and before I know it I am so consumed with tasks that I have lost sight of this goal.  It was only recently, however, that I finally recognized I was operating under the misconception that my daily life and my spiritual life were separate from each other.  I realized one way to honor this commitment to draw closer to Spirit was to better Integrate my connection with Spirit in everything I do throughout the day.  Washing dishes or cleaning a room can be an invitation to bring Spirit into these activities.  Pulling weeds in the garden can also be an opportunity to increase my awareness of the presence of guidance in my life as I feel their assistance in what I am doing.  Approaching even the most mundane of tasks with greater consciousness by realizing Spirit is always present and offering support provides a multitude of ways to strengthen that connection with the Divine.  When we are more aware of our relationship with Spirit it can also motivate us to rethink how we devote our time and attention.  I may be less interested in reading negative online social media posts or watching television programming that drains rather than fills me.  This week in our prayer and meditation time let us reflect on how we use our talents and resources and whether those activities truly reflect our desire to Integrate the presence of Spirit in all that we do.  May we learn to recognize we are always connected to Spirit and have the support of Guidance available to us in every moment of every day.

Ask yourself what do I feel in my body when I desire to more strongly Integrate the presence of Divine Guidance into every aspect of my life?  How does it feel in my body when I go through my daily routine more aware of how fully Integrated Spirit is with everything I do?  Then send the energy and intention of those feelings to the nation.

Be sure to disconnect from the circle at the end and express thanks for those who have helped us in this effort.

Meditation Instructions for Sun., October 7, 2018

For this Sunday, October 7th, the focus for our meditation will be on the Divine Feminine.  Astrologically we have been entering into an era in which we will see an increasing influence from the energy of the Divine Feminine.  This is a subtle but powerful energy that enhances our ability to be receptive to intuition.  It is important to recognize this is an energy that is equally vital to both men and women; it is not the singular domain of one gender or the other.  In honoring the presence of the Divine Feminine in all of us we become more nurturing and supportive and less competitive and forceful.  There can still be a fierceness to this energy, particularly if the protective maternal instincts are roused, but it tends to make us more emotionally sensitive and aware.  Acknowledging the Divine Feminine leads to an awakening and expansion of our heart that helps us act with more compassion in our dealings with others.  These are all qualities that benefit both genders, and to allow that energy to be nourished in us has the potential to create a kinder, gentler world.  Given all the turmoil in our nation we want to find a way to halt the flow of anger that seems to erupt like uncontrolled lava and instead breathe in the calming, grounding energy of the Divine Feminine.  This week in our prayer and meditation let us ask that a greater appreciation of this sacred force resonate through our entire country.  May all people come to recognize the importance of the influence of the Divine Feminine and be drawn to perpetuate its loving energy in every aspect of our lives.

Ask yourself what do I feel in my body when I am aware of the presence of the powerful energy of the Divine Feminine in the world?  How does it feel in my body when I recognize the important influence of the Divine Feminine in my life?  Then send the energy and intention of those feelings to the nation.

Meditation Instructions for Sun., September 30, 2018

For this Sunday, September 30th, the focus for our meditation will be on Truth.  In matters such as disagreements everyone clamors for the Truth but few are willing to accept it in its entirety.  Truth seldom brings the sense of completion or satisfaction that people believe will automatically accompany it.  The full Truth often contains elements people find objectionable or wish to ignore, but when we demand the Truth we cannot selectively choose which aspects to believe and which to ignore.  Despite all this, a world completely devoid of Truth is a far worse state of existence.  Joseph Goebbels, Hitler’s propaganda minister, once infamously said, “If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it.”  I believe people who have only a casual acquaintance with the Truth and regularly distort it for their own benefit actually damage their Soul with each false utterance.  Research studies confirm that none of us is ever perfectly honest all the time, but there is a clear line not to be crossed when it comes to certain issues.  Lying to manipulate or harm another individual is unacceptable under any circumstance.  Lying can too easily become a slippery slope where an initial small “fib” must be supported by additional falsehoods that then accumulate into a massive deception.  The key is to foster the personal integrity and discipline to encourage the Truth in yourself and in others even if it is sometimes unpleasant.  This week in our prayer and meditation time let us ask that all across this nation no longer remain inured to falsehood but crave the Truth instead.  May all learn to accept the Truth even when it does not match their desires, and may we perpetuate a spirit of honesty that honors the Truth across this entire land.

Ask yourself what do I feel in my body when I am able to recognize the Truth in a matter, even when it contradicts what I would like to believe?  How does it feel in my body when I am able to find the courage and integrity to seek and offer the full Truth in my communication with others?  Then send the energy and intention of those feelings to the nation.

Be sure to disconnect from the circle at the end and express thanks for those who have helped us in this effort.

Meditation Instructions for Sun., September 23, 2018

For this Sunday, September 23rd, the focus for our meditation will be on Humility.  I enjoy reading biographies of accomplished individuals.  I think a part of me believes by reading about their life I can unconsciously embed in myself the secret to what made them successful.  Interestingly, a desire to be seen as successful is probably one of the least important attributes.  Over and over again these accounts describe how very accomplished people seldom recognize their own greatness.  Instead, they frequently feel as though they fall short of their own or other’s expectations.  Many don’t see themselves as anyone special or different, and often they are much more critical of their own flaws than those who know them well.  It may be their Humble nature that makes them continue to strive to excel in life rather than rest on their laurels.  So many of our society’s problems seem motivated by ego and false pride.  People are overly sensitive to any perceived slight and the pressure of our modern world causes them to erupt in anger and hatred.  If only more people had a greater sense of Humility perhaps we would not experience the frequent violence that plagues our culture.  This week in our prayer and meditation time let us ask that people adopt more Humility instead of inflating their ego which ultimately fails to bring any sense of genuine satisfaction. Let us ask that a wave of Humility sweep across this nation and help us all become better citizens as a result.

Ask yourself what do I feel in my body when I have a sense of genuine Humility in how I conduct myself?  How does it feel in my body when I am able to let go of ego and allow myself to be truly Humble in my dealings with the world?  Then send the energy and intention of those feelings to the nation.

Meditation Instructions for Sun., September 16, 2018

For this Sunday, September 16th, the focus for our meditation will be on Engagement.  I am a huge believer in the power of prayer and have seen first-hand the miracles it can manifest.  That’s why I was initially quite puzzled at the anger directed at people offering “hopes and prayers” for those experiencing a crisis such as a mass shooting.  It wasn’t until someone explained it to me that I finally realized the outrage was not about prayers or being hopeful but was more about the apathy of those who were in a position to do much more yet failed to take action.  His Holiness the Dalai Lama recently wrote, “In the present circumstances, no one can afford to assume that someone else will solve their problems.  Each one of us has a responsibility to help guide our global family in the right direction.  Good wishes are not sufficient; we must become actively Engaged.”  Even a great spiritual leader such as the Dalai Lama recognizes we have an obligation to do more than just prayer in order to help alleviate suffering and lift up others.  So how do we become actively Engaged?  Not everyone is in a position to be able to donate money to ease the plight of those in need, but all of us can volunteer our time or donate clothes or household goods we no longer use.  If more people were willing to become actively Engaged rather than sit idly by watching others struggle our country would definitely be guided in the right direction.  This week in our prayer and meditation time let us consider ways in which we might become more Engaged with our communities and those around us.  Let us ask to be shown how to better Engage with others and collectively lift up our society and nation.

Ask yourself what do I feel in my body when I am willing to truly Engage deeply with others?  How does it feel in my body when I am able to become actively Engaged in improving my community?  Then send the energy and intention of those feelings to the nation.

Meditation Instructions for Sun., September 9, 2018

For this Sunday, September 9th, the focus for our meditation will be on Listening.  We have had this particular topic as a theme for our meditation practice in the past, but on those instances the emphasis was on Listening to Spirit.  With the ongoing turmoil in our country I have been thinking about why there is such a lack of bipartisanship and why our nation is so polarized.  In considering the qualities of bipartisanship there are the elements of having respect for the other party, a willingness to make needed concessions, and at the root of it all the ability to Listen and take in what the other person is saying.  We are terrible Listeners.  We tend to leap to assumptions and erroneously fill in gaps and worse yet never really give the other individual a chance to be heard.  We too quickly shut the other person out, assuming they are not going to contribute anything of value to the conversation.  Under these conditions, how can honest and effective communication ever take place?  Even trained professionals lack this skill.  A study of board-certified family physicians found as the patient began describing why they sought treatment it took less than 18 seconds for the doctor to interrupt the patient.  Part of this was probably their impatience given the time constraints of a busy schedule, but as a result they often missed important information that would have led to better diagnoses and treatment plans.  I think what leads to the frustration from so many segments of our society is the feeling that they are not being heard.  If we all took the time to be willing to truly Listen to others, especially those with whom we disagree, it would help ease so much of the tension and discord we are experiencing in our country.  This week in our prayer and meditation time let us ask that as a nation we each seek to become better Listeners.  May we be shown how to graciously give others a chance to actually be heard, and may our willingness to engage in genuine communication spread to those in leadership so true bipartisanship behavior can occur.

Ask yourself what do I feel in my body when I take time to actually Listen without judgment to what others are saying?  How does it feel in my body when someone gives me the courtesy of really Listening to what I want to say?  Then send the energy and intention of those feelings to the nation.

Meditation Instructions for Sun., September 2, 2018

For this Sunday, September 2nd, the focus for our meditation will be on Service.  This weekend the nation eulogizes the passing of Senator John McCain.  Because of the nature of his illness he had time to ponder the inevitable and speak about his battle with cancer and reflect on his life.  In one interview he was asked how he wanted to be remembered, and he immediately gave the simple response, “He Served his country.”  Our life is best utilized not by the pursuit of self-satisfaction but by using our gifts and talents in the Service of others.  One does not need to be a member of the military or take a political office to Serve.  Some of us may be called to Serve where we work or perhaps in the communities where we live with the intent of making them a better place.  For all of us, Service involves doing what we can to improve the places where we live, work or attend school.  It means keeping in focus the higher good for all and not allowing our own desires to distract our attention.  Service can be as simple an act as picking up a piece of litter in a public area or volunteering your time for a charitable group.  This week in our prayer and meditation time let us ask that the spirit of Service resonate across this nation so more people will be willing to act with the greater good in mind rather than behave selfishly.  Let us ask that this nation pause to honor Sen. McCain’s selflessness in his desire to be of Service to his country and be inspired by his example.

Ask yourself what do I feel in my body when I have freely given of my time and talents to Serve the needs of others?  How does it feel in my body when I appreciate the Service of others who work to leave their surroundings a little better?  Then send the energy and intention of those feelings to the nation.

Meditation Instructions for Sun., August 26, 2018

For this Sunday, August 26th, the focus for our meditation will be on Intimacy.  To be able to have an Intimate relationship requires a comfortable closeness to exist.  There is an element of familiarity and trust that allows you to drop any pretense or artifice and just be yourself.  What about people who may not be in a partnered relationship or may even be recluses who prefer to isolate themselves from society?  None of us is ever truly alone, for we always have access to the Intimacy of Spirit in our lives.  Yet, many of us spend more time craving Intimacy with other human beings and neglect or ignore the need for Intimacy with Spirit.  So how can we cultivate greater Intimacy with Spirit?  Anything that gives us the opportunity to feel closer and have a greater appreciation for the presence of Spirit in our life.  Obviously, meditating and prayer can develop that affinity but many other activities can achieve the same bond.  Walking in nature, appreciating beauty found in art, or marveling at the everyday miracle of living beings are some of the ways to tangibly establish a connection with Spirit.  This week in our prayer and meditation time let us consider how we can seek greater Intimacy with the Divine in our life.  Let us examine whether we neglect this aspect of our relationships and ask to be guided how to foster a closeness and Intimacy with Spirit that will support us in every way.

Ask yourself what do I feel in my body when I am aware of the presence of Spirit in my life and the divine Intimacy that allows me to feel fully supported?  How does it feel in my body when I have a sense of closeness with Spirit that enables an Intimacy unlike any other relationship?  Then send the energy and intention of those feelings to the nation.

Meditation Instructions for Sun., August 19, 2018

For this Sunday, August 19th, the focus for our meditation will be on Curiosity.  This end-of-summer season finds our young people preparing to return for another year of schooling.  Most are hopefully eager to be back with teachers, counselors, and other staff who serve as important mentors for them.  I was one of those students who couldn’t wait for the school year to resume.  Summer break was always filled with fun activities, but I adored my teachers and looked forward to learning new things.  One of the goals of a good education is to not just fill heads with facts but to imbue students with a Curiosity and desire to learn more that will serve them their entire life.  Part of being Curious is to first be able to observe so one can notice when a set of information is incomplete or incoherent.  The next element of Curiosity is to then have the wonder and desire to figure out what is missing or learn why something doesn’t make sense.  The last element of Curiosity is to have the skill to know how to seek out additional information.  This is a very different method from the recall and recognition abilities on which rote memorization relies.  If our students are able to establish Curiosity as a part of their character, it will serve them well in life.  As adults they will be less vulnerable to manipulation or apathetic acceptance of conditions that need to change.  Having a greater sense of Curiosity in the citizens on which our future rests will guarantee our nation is always seeking to improve and move forward rather than rest in stagnation.  This week in our prayer and meditation time let us remember the students who are returning to school and ask that they be filled with the lifelong spark of Curiosity.  Let us also send the light and energy of our prayers to those who help shepherd our students through their education and ask that they be supported in their efforts to build a generation of kind and thoughtful citizens who always remain Curious about life.

Meditation Instructions for Sun., August 12, 2018

For this Sunday, August 12th, the focus for our meditation will be on History.  I never appreciated until well into my adulthood how inaccurate is written History.  I falsely assumed that what was in our school textbooks (today’s equivalent of the Internet) must be true.  Even when not filled with errors there can also be unintentional distortions in what is passed down.  I didn’t realize growing up in New England how much more coverage was given in school to the Revolutionary War than the Civil War.  The former conflict obviously had greater Historical impact in that region than the Civil War whose summary in my education was it happened, the North won, end of story.  There is an adage that those who do not know or understand their History are bound to repeat it.  This is true not just for nations but ourselves as well.  We never want to become trapped in the victimhood our personal History can sometimes impose on us.  But, it can be invaluable to know our family history, our roots and where we come from.  What challenges were faced by our ancestors?  What mistakes were made?  Are there family patterns that emerge that once understood we can work to unravel so they don’t repeat?  This week in our prayer and meditation time let us consider whether we are burdened by our History or can instead gain valuable lessons from it.  Let us ask to be shown where there may be patterns in our History that need to be interrupted so we can free ourselves of that which does not serve us well.

Ask yourself what do I feel in my body when I am aware of my family History and the challenges my ancestors have overcome?  How does it feel in my body when I understand my own personal History and how it can help identify patterns that need to be broken?  Then send the energy and intention of those feelings to the nation.

Be sure to disconnect from the circle at the end and express thanks for those who have helped us in this effort.
